How to choose the right size teak garden dining set

A teak garden dining set is a big purchase, and the most common worry we hear is simple: will it fit? The good news is that a tape measure and a few minutes are all you need. This guide walks through our set sizes, how many people each one seats, and a general guide to the space you'll want around the table.

Start with how many people you'll usually seat

Think about everyday use first, then the big occasions. An extending table is the easy answer if those two numbers are different, because you can keep it short most of the time and open it up when friends or family come round.

• 4 people: the Wentworth 4 Seater has a 120cm round folding table and 4 folding chairs.
• 4 to 6 people: the Windsor 4–6 Seater has an oval table that extends from 120cm to 180cm.
• 6 to 8 people: the Ascot 8 Seater seats 6 at 180cm and 8 at 240cm. The Classic 8 Seater adds a middle 210cm length.
• 8 to 10 people: the Dartmouth seats 8 day to day and extends to 10, with a 200–300cm table.

The Windsor, Ascot, Classic and Dartmouth chairs all have a 45cm seat height and a 45cm seat depth.

Leave room to pull the chairs out

The table is only part of the footprint. People need room to pull a chair back, sit down and get up again without stepping off the edge of the patio.

General guide only: allow about 75–90cm between the table edge and any wall, step or border on every side. That's simple arithmetic: add 2 x 75–90cm to the table length, and 2 x 75–90cm to the table depth.

Here's what that gives for each set:

• Wentworth (120cm round): about 270–300cm x 270–300cm
• Windsor at 120cm: about 270–300cm x 250–280cm
• Windsor at 180cm: about 330–360cm x 250–280cm
• Ascot or Classic at 180cm: about 330–360cm x 250–280cm
• Classic at 210cm: about 360–390cm x 250–280cm
• Ascot or Classic at 240cm: about 390–420cm x 250–280cm
• Dartmouth at 200cm: about 350–380cm x 260–290cm
• Dartmouth at 300cm: about 450–480cm x 260–290cm

These are rough figures to help you plan, not a promise of comfort. Every garden is different, so measure your own space.

How to measure your space

1. Measure the flat, usable area: patio, decking or level lawn.
2. Note anything that eats into it, such as steps, planters, a back door that opens outwards, or a path people need to walk along.
3. Mark out the "space needed" figure above with string or garden canes. Walk around it and try pulling an imaginary chair out on each side.
4. If you're choosing an extending set, check the space for the length you'll use most, and whether you can open it fully for the occasional big meal.

Extending or fixed?

If your garden only has room for the shorter length most of the year, an extending table makes sense. The leaves on the Windsor, Ascot, Classic and Dartmouth fold away inside the table, so there's nothing extra to store. The Classic's two leaves give you three lengths (180, 210 and 240cm), while the Ascot's single leaf gives you two (180 and 240cm). Both seat 8 at full length with the same chairs and cushions.

If space is tight or you want to put the set away between uses, the Wentworth's table and chairs fold down.

Storing chairs over winter
